Indian education system is at a very critical stage, as it even though there have been numerous achievements, but there is still a lot that remains to be achieved. Every developed nation has a strong education system which not only boosted its development through capital formation but also led to improvement in the quality of life. Indian education system is a rigorous one, but today achieiving excellence along with equity is a great challenge. The current government has been focusing on educational policies and reforms, but the lack of a well-thought strategy is still visible. Haphazard and random reforms will not lead to betterment, but will further drag us behind the goal of providing a good "Education For All". Although changes are needed at various levels of the education system however, first step of reform needs to be at the stage of financing as there is large scale corruption and the money alloted for projects is going in wrong hands. At the ground level the school administrators often complain about the delays and hurdles of bureaucracy, hence complete transparency needs to be promoted during governance.
While designing policies it should be visualised that the Indian education system is not in the same condition all over India and there are huge regional disparities, hence top-most priority needs to be given to the backward regions, while also providing encouragement to the centres of excellence for raising their standards to compete internationally. It should be realised that it is not the either or choice betwwen equitable access and excellence, both type need to be pursued through provison of effective and efficient infrastructure.
